Fakebook allows teachers and students to create imaginary profile pages for study purposes. Use “Fakebook” to chart the plot of a book, the development of a character, a series of historical events, the debates and relationships between people.

The Real Book may refer to a number of compilations of lead sheets for jazz standards. It usually refers to the first volume of a series of books transcribed and collated by Berklee College of Music students during the 1970s.

Jazz standards are musical compositions that are an important part of the musical repertoire of jazz musicians, in that they are widely known, performed, and recorded by jazz musicians, and widely known by listeners.

A piano fake book allows you to read and play music on your piano. But unlike your typical books, which contain the score as written by the composer or arranger, a fake book is more of a reference for the songs.

A “fake book” contains songs written in a concise format that includes only the melody and chords, letting you interpret the song’s performance as you feel is appropriate. This is great for quickly learning songs by yourself or with an ensemble.

Each song in a fake book only has a single melody actually written out in notes, which is usually the vocal or lead melody. This melody will have the lyrics written beneath the notes, with each word aligned to its corresponding note. Above the notes of the melody will appear the names of the appropriate chords to play – for example, a “C minor” chord would be written as “Cmin” or Cm”, rather than writing out all of the notes in those chords as they appeared in the original version of the song.
